  Buffered Vitamin C with Flavonoids

Flavonoids enhance the body's absorption of vitamin C. Researchers report that people who take vitamin C and E supplements have a 50 per cent lower risk of dying prematurely from disease than do people who do not supplement. A new study reports people who consume more than 750 mg/day of vitamin C reduce their risk of dying prematurely by 60 percent.

Other researchers have found that people who suffer from asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease have much lower levels of vitamin C in their blood than do healthy people.

A diet rich in vitamin C and bioflavonoids from fruits and vegetables provides protection against cancer and heart disease.

Large doses (1-2 g/day) of vitamin C have been found to reduce asthma symptoms significantly. Recent studies have shown that vitamin C concentrations in the blood from rheumatoid arthritis patients are extremely low and that vitamin C may protect against further damage to inflamed joints.

The late Nobel prize winner, Linus Pauling, recommended a minimum of 6,000 mg of Vitamin C daily for optimum results. He lived to the age of 93 with all of his mental faculties intact.

Numerous studies have shown that an adequate intake of vitamin C is effective in lowering the risk of developing cancers of the breast, cervix, colon, rectum, esophagus, larynx, lung, mouth, prostate, and stomach.

Daily supplementation with 500 mg of vitamin C for 10 years or more has been found to cut the risk of developing bladder cancer by 60 per cent. The spread of breast cancer (metastasis) is now believed to be predominantly due to free radical damage which can be controlled through intake of increased amounts of vitamin C.

Supplementation with 3 g/day of vitamin C has been found to effectively prevent further polyp growth in colon cancer and a vitamin C intake of more than 157 mg/day has been found to reduce the risk of developing colon cancer by 50 percent.

People of retirement age who took supplements of both vitamin E and C daily saw their risk of Alzheimer's disease plummet by almost 80 per cent, a new study shows.

It appears that when the two vitamins are taken in high doses they work together to protect neurons. The use of these antioxidant vitamins may offer an attractive strategy for the prevention of Alzheimer disease. It appears the high dose of vitamin available in individual supplements is what provided the additional protection.

Vitamin supplements - and vitamins E and C - have been touted for years as effective against a host of conditions, including cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer.

Vitamin C is known as the most versatile supplement in helping the immune system, colds, infections, viruses, bacterial toxins, allergies and cholesterol. SuperbHerbs' Ultra C is buffered to help prevent the stomach upset many people experience with other brands. Blended with additional Rose Hip extract and 420 mg of bioflavonoids, we feel this is our ultimate easy-to-take C product.

Flavonoids are helpful in the absorption of vitamin C and protect the multifunctional vitamin C molecule from oxidation, thereby improving and prolonging its functioning. Therefore, the flavonoids are indirectly, and possibly directly, involved in maintaining the health of the collagen that holds the cells together by forming the basement membranes of cells, tissues, and cartilage.

The main known function of the flavonoids is to increase the strength of the capillaries and to regulate their permeability. The capillaries link the arteries to the veins. They deliver oxygen and nutrients to the organs, tissues, and cells and then pick up carbon dioxide and waste and carry them through the veins and back to the heart. By its support of the capillaries, vitamin P helps to prevent hemorrhage and rupture of these tiny vessels, which could lead to easy bruising. Also, capillary strength may help protect us from infection, particularly viral problems. Flavonoids also can reduce the amount of histamine released from cells; quercetin is definitely strong in this function.

Uses:

The main use of the flavonoids is to provide synergy in the utilization of vitamin C; therefore they contribute to many vitamin C applications — for example, the treatment of colds and flus. Flavonoids themselves are often supplemented for problems where improved capillary strength is needed, such as bleeding gums, easy bruising, and duodenal bleeding ulcers, which may be worsened by weak capillaries. The rutin component is particularly good for decreasing bleeding from weak blood vessels. In hemorrhoids, varicose veins, spontaneous abortions, excess menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), postpartum hemorrhage, nosebleeds, the bleeding problems of diabetes, and generally during pregnancy, the flavonoids may be helpful in maintaining capillary health and reducing bleeding concerns.

For women who have repeated spontaneous abortions or premature labor, supplementing citrus bioflavonoids—for example, 200 mg. three times daily—may be helpful in remedying these problems. Vitamin P has been used also in asthma, allergies, bursitis and arthritis, and eye problems secondary to diabetes and as protection from the harmful effects of radiation.
