Colon cancer develops in the lining of the bowel, known as the mucosal lining. It is very similar to the lining of the inside of your mouth. A single cell in the bowel lining mutates and begins to multiply rapidly. The collection of cells that grows will often form a polyp. Polyps are a collection of non-cancerous cells, which looks like a pea on the end of a stalk. Many older people have polyps on their bowel lining. The polyp grows very slowly and can take between 6 and 10 years before it becomes cancerous. The cancer cells first invade the polyp stalk and then move down into the bowel lining. The cancer will keep growing until it eventually penetrates through the bowel wall. The cancer cells may go into the lymph nodes or the blood stream and can move to other parts of the body where a ‘secondary’ tumour may develop. In bowel cancer this is often in the liver. Food high in fat may increase the risk of bowel cancer by causing the body to increase the amount of certain digestive chemicals, which if left in the bowel for any length of time, may cause changes to cells lining the bowel. Fat may be found in processed foods such as cookies, ice cream, puddings and in processed meat products such as ham, sausages, bacon and lunch meat. Too much sugar from processed foods and soft drinks alter the type and number of bacteria growing and living in the bowel. If the numbers of ‘friendly’ bacterial decrease then the bowel may not work efficiently. Many of these foods are low in fiber and slow down the movement of the waste matter travelling through the bowel allowing any toxins present to have more contact with cells in the bowel lining. Impaired digestion, poor absorption and a general deterioration of the intestinal tract can go on for quite some time without producing recognizeable symptoms. When symptoms first appear they are usually general and non-specific and can include: decreased energy, headache, fatigue, reduced resistance to infections and minor digestive problems, such as bloating, gas, belching, indigestion and constipation. We either ignore these early signs of bowel dysfunction or suppress them with antacids, gas relievers and laxatives. As the bowel function continues to deteriorate, more serious problems arise.
