Cancer is not a single disease, but the generic name for more than 100 diseases, all having in common the uncontrolled reproduction of abnormal cells. Although scientists are only now beginning to understand the causes and growth of cancer, there exists a large and growing body of evidence showing that the foods we choose each day play a major part in cancer prevention.

Obesity is also said to adversely affect sex hormones, which may spur on hormone-fueled cancer development, as in breast cancer where fat tissue increases serum levels of free estradiol.
Research has found that higher calorie consumption can double men's risk of prostate cancer. A number of studies have also set forth the idea that high-fat foods may contribute to oxidative damage, which predisposes cells to cancer development. Simply put, evidence points to a preventive diet that is high in fruits and vegetables and low in fat, which translates into foods that are high in antioxidants and low in oxidants.
The lifetime risk of developing cancer is more than one in three. Research now shows that infection with any of a number of different viruses may play an important role in the growth and development of cancer. These viruses include Hepatitis B & C, HPV and HIV.
Cancer affecting the colon and/or rectum is diagnosed in more than 140,000 Americans each year. About one in nine cases affect people younger than 50, or up to about 15,000 young people annually.
Since lung cancer incidence rates have reached an apparent plateau and prostate cancer has increased dramatically, cancer of the prostate gland has become the most common type of cancer among both black and white males. Lung cancer and colorectal cancer rates are the second and third highest, respectively, for both black and white males. Bladder cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in white males, but ranks only ninth for black males.
Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer among both white and black females. It occurs more frequently among white females (113.2 per 100,000) than among black females (94.0 per 100,000). Lung cancer and colorectal cancer are the second and third highest cancers, respectively, among white females compared to ranks of third and second highest, respectively, for black females. Even though lung and colorectal cancers are two of the most common cancers among females, their incidence is much lower than that for males.

2. Green Tea Extract: Green Tea Component Destroys Cancer Cells by Blocking Key Enzyme. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a component of green tea, seems to induce apoptosis of prostate cancer cells by inhibiting fatty acid synthase (FAS), an enzyme that is overexpressed in a variety of human malignancies. 3. Grape Seed Extract: The grape skin and seeds appear to hold a natural cancer-fighting chemical, California researchers report. Scientists at City of Hope Cancer Center in Los Angeles isolated a phytochemical, called procyanidin B dimer, that when given to mice with breast cancer reduced the size of their tumors. There was a pretty significant reduction of tumor size in all the mice, and a number of animals ended up with no tumors. The researchers believe natural phytochemicals are more likely to be used in a preventive way than as treatment for breast cancer.

5. Flax Seed Oil: Including flaxseed as part of a low-fat diet may slow the growth of tumors in men with prostate cancer, a Duke University study suggest. In the study, prostate cancer patients who added about 3 heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily to their juice, yogurt and other low-fat foods had more slowly-dividing tumor cells and a greater rate of tumor cell death than men who did not follow this diet.

For the first time, cancer has surpassed heart disease as the top killer of Americans under 85, health officials report. The good news is that deaths from both are falling, but improvement has been more dramatic for heart disease. In 2002, the most recent year for which information is available, 476,009 Americans under 85 died of cancer compared with 450,637 who died of heart disease.
A third of all cancers are related to smoking, and another third are related to obesity, poor diets and lack of exercise - all factors that also contribute to heart disease.
- An estimated 1,372,910 new cancer cases and 570,260 cancer deaths are expected this year. Five-year survival rates have risen from 50 percent in the 1970s to 74 percent today.
- Lung cancer remains the biggest killer, projected to claim 163,510 lives this year.
- Some 232,090 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and it will kill 30,350.
- About 211,240 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and it will kill 40,410.
- The report also highlights cancers caused by germs - 1.5 million cases or 26 percent of cases in developing countries; and 360,000 cases or 7.3 percent of cancers in developed countries like the United States.
These are mostly liver cancer, caused by the hepatitis B and C viruses; cervical cancer, caused by human papillomavirus; stomach cancer caused by the bacteria H. pylori; and AIDS-related cancers caused by infection with HIV.
