Extend your life and years of well-being by taking vitamins daily in optimum amounts to supplement the vitamins you get from food.

Superbherbs offer vitamin supplements, minerals, enzymes and amino acids for health improvement, longevity and weight loss.

The Journal of the American Medical Association recommends that all adults take a multivitamin daily.
This advice is based on a comprehensive review of more than 30 years of scientific literature that supports the use of vitamins in preventing common chronic illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. The review confirmed that Americans are not getting enough of the essential nutrients they need from food alone.

The myth that the average diet is complete has been perpetuated by the last two generations of mainstream dieticians, nutritionists and misinformed physicians and funded directly and indirectly by the pharmaceutical industry, which has the most to lose by the existence of a healthy population.

The journal features two articles by a pair of Harvard physicians who based their findings on a scientific review of studies on vitamins. Some populations, notably older people, have a higher risk of inadequate vitamin intake and the general population is also at risk. The low cost associated with multivitamins make them a convenient and affordable choice for disease prevention and a multivitamin would significantly offset the health risks associated with inadequate diet.

The late Nobel prize winner, Linus Pauling, recommended a minimum of 6,000 mg of Vitamin C daily for optimum results. He lived to the age of 93 with all of his mental faculties intact.

"The principal way in which Vitamin C and other vitamins function is by strengthening the natural protective mechanisms of the human body, especially the immune system, and by increasing the effectiveness of enzymes in catalyzing biochemical reactions."

How Antioxidants Work

As cells function normally in the body, they produce damaged molecules — called free radicals. These free radicals are highly unstable and steal components from other cellular molecules, such as fat, protein, or DNA, thereby spreading the damage.

This damage continues in a chain reaction, and entire cells soon become damaged and die. This process is called peroxidation. Peroxidation is useful because it helps the body destroy cells that have outlived their usefulness and kills germs and parasites. However, peroxidation, when left unchecked, also destroys or damages healthy cells.

Antioxidants help prevent widespread cellular destruction by willingly donating components to stabilize free radicals. More importantly, antioxidants return to the surface of the cell to stabilize rather than damage other cellular components.

When there are not enough antioxidants to hold peroxidation in check, free radicals begin damaging healthy cells which, in turn, can lead to problems. For example, free radical damage to immune cells can lead to an increased risk of infections or cancer.

Many vitamins and minerals are antioxidants. These include vitamins A, C, D, E, beta carotene, most of the B vitamins, and minerals such as zinc and selenium. Some other important antioxidants are neither vitamins nor minerals.

The antioxidant nutrients are the body's natural antitoxins, are crucial to homeostasis and have regulatory roles in a diversity of tissue functions. It is good "nutritional insurance" to supplement the diet with powerful antioxidants. It is the way you can protect yourself against the two main killer diseases - cancer and coronary heart disease - as well holding back the aging process and protecting your eyes from cataracts and macular degeneration.

Antioxidants also are being researched as a way to protect against diabetes, relieve arthritis, fight asthma and slow the effects of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.

Vitamin C scavenges oxygen free radicals, inhibits nitrosamine formation and has consistently been shown to reduce cancers of the digestive tract (esophagus, stomach and pancreas). It regenerates vitamin E from the tocopheroxyl radical. Suggested safe supplementation: 500 - 5000mg.

Vitamin E acts to protect the conjugated bonds of polyunsaturated fats and beta-carotene from being broken down. It prevents LDL-cholesterol from oxidation. It is the major anti-oxidant in all cell membranes where it maintains the stability of the fatty acids in the phospholipid layer. Suggested safe supplementation:(400 - 1200IU) as d-alpha-tocopherol.

Carotenoids are a group of 500 to 600 compounds responsible for the yellow and orange colors in fresh produce. Many have antioxidant properties due to their highly-conjugated double bond structures. Epidemiological evidence repeatedly links high intakes of fruit and vegetables (the major sources of carotenoids) with lower risk of cancers. A NIH study found that people who ate vegetables rich in carotenoids had a 43 per cent lower risk of macular degeneration of the eye than those who only ate small amounts.

Beta-carotene (converted to vitamin A) is the best-known and most abundant of the carotenoids. It inactivates free radicals, improves immune capacity and inhibits the early stages of tumor development. It occurs naturally in dark-green or orange-colored vegetables and fruits.

Lycopene, the red matter of tomatoes and watermelon, is the most powerful anti-oxidant of all the carotenoids, being a more ferocious quencher of singlet oxygen than the well-known beta-carotene. High intakes have been linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer in men.

Alpha-carotene acts as an anti-oxidant and, like beta-carotene, is converted to vitamin A in the body. High intakes are associated with decreased risk of lung cancer.

Lutein protects the macula of the eye from deterioration, a leading cause of vision loss among older adults.

Selenium works in combination with vitamins C and E. It is a component of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase which reduces peroxides before they can attack intracellular membranes. It also enhances immune response. Recommended dietary intake 100 - 200 micrograms

Zinc is part of the enzyme superoxide dismutase which prevents free radicals from forming peroxides. It is excellent for the prevention of skin diseases, eyes and the prostate. Suggested safe supplementation 50mg
